Hello WFC families!
We know that the recent COVID 19 has brought many unexpected change's to our daily lives and future plans... Soccer being one of them! WFC has moved to suspend all practices for the month of March. However, the capital area soccer league has been working hard to ensure we are able to kick off the season on schedule April 18th! IF, the state government takes more drastic actions, we will follow these directives to ensure our players and families are safe. Currently we are exploring all options to provide our players with some type of training to help prepare them for the highly anticipated 2020 spring season. If there is any way we can be of assistance during this time, please feel free to contact us at 517-455-6903. Stay safe and as always... GO WARRIORS!

Hello WFC families!
This has to have been one of the craziest spring seasons ever! We certainly missed working with our players and watching grow as they give their all out on the fields. On a positive note, all our teams went undefeated (due to no games) haha. That's right, we rather see this as a glass half full kind of situation. However, we do hope you all have been enjoying this time off and staying safe.
Moving forward, we are still waiting to see how things will unfold within CASL and the soccer world in general. Although we were not able to play soccer this past spring, we are hopeful we will be able to return to the fields this fall!
With everyday norms being challenged and changed, why not add one more to the way we do things, FALL REGISTRATION.
So… This fall, registration will take place online only!
If your player was registered for the Spring 2020 season, you simply need to fill out their name and date of birth on the form below.
If you had made a payment for the spring season, please select how you would like those funds handled in the box titled, payment option.
If your player does not plan on returning this fall and you had made a payment for the 2020 Spring season, we ask that you email (waverlyfc@yahoo.com) or text Coach Moreno at 517-455-6903 so that we can make sure you are reimbursed.

This statement is in regards to the recent decision of Waverly High School’s Athletic Director, Scott Casteele. Mr. Casteele has recently made the decision to change the direction of the Waverly High School Men’s and Women’s Soccer Teams. The changes of the soccer program began when the 2015-2016 school year began. Mr. Casteele met with Varsity Coach, Matt Hill, and Junior Varsity Coach, Dan Moreno, at the prior to the start of the Waverly Men’s Soccer season. In this meeting and throughout both the men’s and women’s season, Mr. Casteele expressed ways that he would like the soccer teams to be coached and provided a change in direction to both Matt Hill and Dan Moreno. These changes include...
Public Relations- Report scores and highlights after games through websites and Lansing State Journal
Participation- During girls season retain at least 80-90% of the girls who committed to the program.
Organization and Communication- Report changes in roster, practice times, and other things that need to be communicated to the AD in a timely fashion
Respect and Player Democracy- Players address coaches as- Coach, Coach Matt, or Coach Hill. Coaches will pick captains as well as tryouts will be on a point system to rank players among each other.
Become Better Coaches Through Classroom/ Video Study- Coaches take classes to further their education in coaching, Use video as a tool to help teach players about the game
Convince Team to Buy Into System- Players need to have belief in the coach to execute the plan. Yelling is ok, but a 3 to 1 positive comment ratio works.
Communication- Use social media- Player of the week, game reviews, game scores, practice plans, schedule changes, and inspirational quotes or articles.
To comply with the new direction of the Waverly High School Athletic Director, the coaching styles of both Matt Hill and Dan Moreno were altered which resulted in immediate changes to the morale and function of the teams. The result of the changes are as follows..
Organization and Communication- AD failed to notify coaches during boys and girls seasons about game changes. During the boys’ season, we traveled to Charlotte only to find out that we were not scheduled to play them. This resulted in a lost of time, school funding, leaving a poor reflection of the coaches organization and communication to parents.
During the Girls season we had similar scheduling issue. At the end of a meeting held by coaches with the AD, the Athletic Director informed coaches of a game to take place that day. This resulted in parents and players having to scramble to be prepared to compete. Ultimately this left many players frustrated and disorganized. Later that season at a home game the AD announce our Varsity Girls Soccer team as the Fowlerville Warriors. Leaving the feeling of disrespect and embarrassment to the players and coaches, as well as the name of the school he works for.
Respect and Player Democracy- Captains of the girls soccer team were picked by the coaches and gaudiness of Mr. Casteele resulting in there being “No Returning Captains”. Players didn’t feel as if it was their team and felt frustrated with it throughout the whole season.
Point system for tryouts put girls who were on Varsity prior years on JV due to work conflicts. As many players juggle multiple things outside of school, players were unable to make all 3 tryout dates resulting in them starting the season as a JV player. This contributed to the frustrations at the beginning of the season.
Become Better Coaches Through Classroom/ Video Study- Coaches furthered their education by taking 4 different CAP (Coaches Advancement Program) classes through the MHSAA during the girl’s season. They were looking to continue classes throughout the summer.
A video camera was purchase during the girls’ season with the combine efforts of the high school and WFC boosters. Players watched film on 3 different occasions and once during a halftime. Results were better understanding of positions and plays.
In addition to working to improve each high school player’s soccer abilities, the coaches have worked to improve the educational focus of each player placing focus on academics over athletics to provide bright futures for each athlete. Due to this focus, for the first time in recent Waverly Soccer history, players from the Men’s and Women’s teams were provided college scholarships to continue to play soccer while continuing their educational and career goals.
Coach Hill and Coach Moreno have not only contributed to the Waverly Soccer Program at the high school level but they have been an instrumental part in developing Waverly Futbol Club. (WFC) The Waverly Futbol Club not only supports the players and the team at a high school level but has provided opportunities for a bright future for Waverly Soccer. Youth feeder programs have been created which allow elementary and middle school students to play soccer. They learn the techniques and styles that are used at the high school level and will make an easy transition for the players as they reach Waverly High School. WFC has a focus on the youth program as it is the future of Waverly High School Soccer.
At the end of the 2015-2016 school year, Mr. Casteele expressed that the direction of the Waverly High School Soccer Programs would be changing which would include the dismissal of the coaches. It is unfortunate that Mr. Casteele does not see the value or efforts in which the coaches have put forth to not only better the high school program but to also provide a future of dedicated Waverly Warriors that understand the dedication and commitment that soccer demands.
Unfortunately, Mr. Casteele does not find value in the efforts of not only Coach Hill and Coach Moreno but the entire WFC staff. The continuation of WFC and the youth feeder program may not be able to continue with the direction that Waverly High School Athletic Director, Scott Casteele, has taken. These changes not only immediately affect the current high school players but also affect the future soccer players of Waverly High School.
Coach Hill and Coach Moreno plan on attending the Board of Education meeting June 20th at 6:30pm to express their concerns regarding the new AD and the direction of Waverly Soccer. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
