Waverly vs Cancer

9/1/2012

On Saturday, August 31st the Waverly High School Soccer Club faced off
against alumni members in the 2nd Inaugural Waverly Soccer Cancer Awareness
Fundraiser.  The purpose of this friendly exhibition was to raise money to
support the fight against cancer in the Lansing Community.

In the past 3 years, the Waverly High School Soccer Community has lost 3 of
its closest members to cancer related symptoms; the parents of 2 Waverly High
School Men’s Varsity members (Rufus Gladney & Ann Schneidewind) and most
recently, former Men’s Varsity player Oliver Martin.  In an effort to honor
their memories and others in the Lansing Community affected by cancer, in 2012
the Waverly High School Soccer Club initiated a fundraiser to its traditional
alumni match. Sparrow Hospital’s Cancer Center and Hospice Department were again
chosen as this year’s fundraising recipients because of the pivotal role they
play in helping the patients and families receive the care and resources they
need throughout their battles.

The event successfully eclipsed its target of $5,000, raising a total of
$5,890.  Since its inception, the event has raised over $11,000 to support the
fight against cancer.

Event organizers, Jimmy Schneidewind & Josh Gladney, current Waverly
Soccer Club members, and all alumni of the program would like to send a “special
thank” to all donors and supporters for their generous contributions.
